Guerilla Geishas, since 2017
I have always been fascinated by traditional Japanese woodcut, the initials of Japanese comic history and the development of which the Manga culture evolved and how this culture is interwoven with the art of temporary Japanese artists.
In the series ‘Guerilla Geishas’ I pick up the impulse to create something new from the Japanese woodcut with its traditional motives. Besides impressive landscapes, scenes with farmers and fishers Geishas are a common motive in Japanese woodcut.
With ‘Guerilla Geishas’ I turn these figures not only into modern, confident women, but have created a storyline for them. The series consist of four lino prints that show four women, musicians, a fictional girl band. I have written and melodized (with Birgit Neugebauer and Julia Keppeler) a song for them. A new picture ‘Ghost of a girl’ evolved based on the song.
This project is still in progress.
Ghost of a girl
I saw
I saw a ghost
I saw the ghost of a girl
I saw the ghost of a girl in the tube
There she stood
Holding on to the loop
Apparently blue
Shimmery see through
She looked
Rustling sizzling whispering buzzing
In the tube
Suddenly
I touched
I touched a ghost
I touched the ghost of a girl
I touched the ghost of a girl in the tube
There I stood
Holding on to the belt
Apparently shy
Chilly and dry
She felt
Rustling sizzling whispering buzzing
In the tube
Then, doors opened
Mind the gap
Gone
